Goal Setting :

Goal setting is one of the critical aspects of advisory. It is mandated by NEASC and the TVHS Expectations for Student Learning. There are two types of goal setting which will occur in advisory. The first is academic goal setting. The intention of academic goal setting is to show students that success in any field requires goal setting. Some students do this naturally. Many need to be required to set goals so that goal setting will become an inherent part of their academic careers. Please give some examples of academic goals. As with all goals, academic goals can be short term (the quarter), medium term (the year) or long term (the year). Please explain that there should be some evidence of all three types of goals.

Examples of academic goals are :

making honor role for first semester

getting all work in on time

writing college essays by October 15th

graduating in June

writing down assignments every night

taking courses that will support my long term academic interests

Each advisor will use advisory time for students to set at least three academic goals by Friday, September 15. Goals will be stored in the advisory files that you received last year. Freshman advisors will receive new folders before the start of the school year. If you don’t have your folders from last year, please contact me and I will put new folders in your box. Please hold onto folders until your advisees graduate. These can be very helpful when writing recommendations for your advisees.

The second type of goal setting is personal goal setting. Personal goal setting follows a similar process as academic goal setting, but are related to the non-academic sphere of your advisees. As with academic goal setting students need to recognize that personal successes are the result of goal setting. For example, a car doesn’t just appear when you get your license. There needs to be planning and goal setting to acquire a car.

Examples of personal goals are :

buying a car

getting a weekend job

running 4 days a week

practicing the saxophone 3 times a week (this could also be academic)

not watching more than 7 hours of TV a week

put annual photo albums together

Each advisor will use advisory time for students to set at least three personal goals by Friday, September 29. Goals will be stored in the advisory files as well.

Goal setting can be achieved by using either the following goal setting sheet or by devising your own goal setting mechanism, however they must be articulated and the articulated goals must be in located in advisee files.

Reviewing goals : At least once a quarter, advisors will set aside advisory time to review progress on academic and personal goals. You may devise your own format or use the following format :How are you progressing on your goals ?What are the challenges you have encountered in achieving your goals ?What are some ways you can overcome your challenges ?Does your goal need to be modified ? If so, please rewrite your modified goal.

Goal setting sheet option

Please think about your academic career in terms of this quarter, this year, and for your four years at TVHS. Please list at least three goals that represent long and/or short term goals.
