World Languages Portfolio Project
Do's and Don'ts for Portfolios

Do send a letter home at the beginning of the year explaining the portfolio.

Do keep a folder in class of work that has been passed back.

Do spread the writing out over a period of time.

Do remind students to pass in subsequent drafts with previous drafts.

Do remind students when passing back papers that might be in their portfolio to put them in their
folder and not lose them.

Do use rubrics.

Do plan some class time for putting portfolios together.

Do insist on students taking serious time to do their self-evaluations.

Do talk up the portfolio at parent conferences, among your colleagues and with your administrator.

Do encourage students to share their finished portfolios at academic fairs etc.

Do tie the portfolio in with your standards.

Do take time to really read their self-evaluations.

Don’t wait until January to start writing projects.

Don’t assume that a middle school portfolio will be equal to a high school portfolio - this is the START of a valuable process.

Don’t have the portfolio due in June. May 15th should be the latest.

Don’t hesitate to e-mail me if you have any questions.
